Myers Briggs Type Indicators (MBTI) is the among the most widely used profiling tools in Australian business. For good reason. We have seen the MBTI framework used to facilitate deep understanding and behavioural change that has a lasting impact on the quality of relationships and workplace effectiveness.
However, unfortunately, the MBTI is also among the most abused and poorly administered workplace intervention instruments. We regularly come across people who have had negative experiences, not so much in relation to the introductory workshop, but in the way some people use the framework to oppress rather than liberate.
When Ergo uses the MBTI framework, we are careful to emphasise two things:
- That the most potent application of an understanding of type is to liberate people to act outside of personal preference; resulting in relational and workplace agility and improved competence. Appreciating our preferences enables us to develop our capacity to behave in alternative ways … this behavioural flexibility is fundamental to high performance in changing environments.
- We map MBTI preferences onto a project life cycle wheel, helping participants appreciate the practical outworkings of their personalities in the workplace
